Retocamos una canción vieja con él, Sweet Talk, y también Leave the Bourbon on the shelf.
Es mas tranquila. necesitamos esa diversidad, pero When you were young es mejor.
Brandon Flowers talks B-sides, babies and backlashes with CAMERON ADAMS..
You've wound up your world tour in Melbourne. What next?
I'm keen to start recording. I assume the next album will be out before the end of next year.
You've worked with Madonna's man, Stuart Price, for the new B-sides album Sawdust. Does that mean the next Killers album will be more dancey?
We touched up an old song with him, Sweet Talk, and also Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf. We definitely are feeling him out.
You seem quite chuffed with Sawdust.
In 20 years when somebody buys Sawdust they won't think it's just a B-sides album. When I had (the Smiths' B-sides album) Hatful of Hollow as a kid I didn't know it was any different from The Queen is Dead. I hope that's a testament to our songwriting. We'll see.
The B-side seems to be a lost art these days.
When we go in to record it's not necessarily going to be a B-side. Those songs on Sawdust were all contenders. We won't even finish a song if we don't think it's good enough.
When Sam's Town came out you said Read My Mind was the best song you'd ever written. How do you feel about it now?
(Pause) It's not as good as I thought it was when we first wrote it. It's awesome, I love playing it every night. It's not shoved down your throat like some of our other songs. It's more laid-back. We need that diversity. But When You Were Young is better. I know from playing it 300 times to crowds. It's just so good.
The fourth single from Sam's Town, For Reasons Unknown, sank without a trace. Any regrets?
No... it was what they call a soft single. We didn't push it. Then there are things like (the Joy Division cover) Shadowplay, which we didn't promote in any way whatsoever, and it's doing better in America than everything except When You Were Young and (Mr) Brightside. It's a mad world, as Tears for Fears said. We'll never put four singles out from an album again. It's ridiculous. It's too many. We're still learning. We've done so much in such a short time that people forget we're still learning the ropes.
You famously said Sam's Town was the best album in 20 years. Update?
I still think it's really good. I wish everyone who wrote a review of that album could come and see us live and see the effect it has on people. And it's not little girls, it's grown-ups. See, we hold up the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, there's this mystique around them. It's almost like reading The Lord of the Rings when you read about these people. We will not let anybody get there, but I'll break it down, that's why I'm here. I'm going to get there. I've said it from the beginning. I'm breaking down that f---ing wall people are putting up.
To get to the level of those bands?
Yeah. They're human beings. It can happen.
You've sung with Lou Reed on Tranquilize...
Show me a better song than that this year. I still have that mentality. Maybe there is, but I can't think of one. Tranquilize is it. But we won't get credit for it. We'll get credit for it in the future, I think.
Lou has a reputation for being a bit grumpy.
He melted real quick. He was giving out hugs by the end. Leather hugs.
Did you know Shadowplay would get such a prominent spot in the Ian Curtis movie Control?
(Director) Anton Corbijn says it gives an emotional uplift to the whole thing. That's another thing that needs to be cleared up. People think L.A. Reid forced us on to this movie or something. The remaining people in Joy Division asked us to do this with Corbijn. If Ian Curtis was alive and it had been a movie about Joy Division, he'd have been right there with them. I dwell too much on these things...
It sounds as if you've been reading too much of your own press.
There's so much cynicism. It's breaking down my optimism. I love life.
Doesn't going out on stage to a sold-out crowd negate what critics say?
Yeah, it does. We've obviously doing something right. (Pause) But see, I've got people down so much, the first thing they'll say is "Creed could sell this place out too", which is bulls---. I've got no leg to stand on.
You're a glass-half-empty person.
No, I'm half full! But I'm so used to defending myself. It's been so long - you can't be flamboyant and be good, you can't be smart and be on the radio. A lot of that was because of Nirvana, they killed a lot of that. I'm just trying to change people's minds.
Rufus Wainwright wrote a song (Tulsa) about you.
Yeah, but I listen to a lot of people's songs and think they're about me.
Such as?
I won't say exactly which ones, but a few out there are love letters to me. He's just the first one who's come out publicly and been open about it! Rufus is one of the great talents of our time. Elton John thinks he's on another level than the rest of the world, and Elton's in the Top 3 ever at writing pop songs.
Who else is in the Top 3?
John Lennon and Elton are right there, then probably (David) Bowie.
U2?
Top 5. Nobody's done that. Nobody's had a career that long, and you know their next album will be good. You know the next Rolling Stones album will suck. No offence, but a song on the next U2 album is going to convert a 14-year-old kid to rock 'n' roll. That's awesome. They're 47 years old or something. People used to bitch about Vertigo around me. Imagine a bunch of 20-year-olds who came out with Vertigo. You'd freak out.
How's your son going?
Really good. I'm going to be there when he gets on solid foods. It's very exciting.
Your Christmas single is called Don't Shoot Me Santa. Discuss.
As opposed to giving a kid a lump of coal, he's going to come shoot him and kill him - a kid who's misbehaved, I guess.
So it's one for the kids.
I don't know. The one (A Great Big Sled) last year was really sentimental. When I hear it it makes me tear up. I thought it was fitting to counteract it.
