KILLERS ON THE LOOSE
By MARY HUHN
THE Killers' leading man, Brandon Flowers, may have a name made for a porn star but he's actually a teetotaling Mormon from Las Vegas.
That makes being on the road for a year and a half extra tough.
"There's nothing to do on tour," he says. "That's how sexy and drugs got added to the rock 'n' roll equation."
His bandmates don't party much, either. So to fill the downtime, they go to movies or shopping ? for all those lovely suits, jackets and eyeliner Flowers wears.
Last time he was here, Flowers was thrilled to stroll Central Park for the first time ? when Christo's Gates project was flourishing. "It was all right," he says.
Tomorrow, he'll see the park from a different perspective, as the Killers open the 20th Anniversary season of Central Park SummerStage (summerstage.org).
It's sold out, but fans of this totally infectious re-new wave pop band can bring a blanket and hang out behind the bleachers.
It's a great way to kick off the summer ? especially when the Killers' MTV hit, "Mr. Brightside" (which has the grand "Moulin Rouge" video) becomes this year's "Crazy in Love" summer anthem. It's already a karaoke staple in Queens.
Since last summer's release of their debut disc, "Hot Fuss," the Killers are living large, particularly in London. Flowers has met all his heroes-turned-Killers-fans ? which include Bono, Bowie and Morrissey ? but he's stunned that he gets to regularly hang out with Elton John, another fan.
"It's unreal," he says. "My dad was a huge fan of Elton. Kids [at school] were listening to Tool, but I understood Elton's songs and melodies more. He's so up-there."
Flowers even started a catfight in the press with the Bravery, which isn't quite the size of Oasis vs. Blur, but it's fun to watch anyway. (He said, "The Bravery are signed because we are a band." In return, the Bravery's Sam Endicott snarled, "I feel bad about talking bad about [Flowers] because it's like hitting a girl." )
The Killers won't be ringing up the Bravery, but Flowers does hope to visit the Statue of Liberty, which he is completely sentimental over. "I tear up when I see it," he says.
