Ronnie Vannucci packs the helium tanks & does a headcount on the chimpanzees ahead of his band’s only headline slot of the summer
NME: You’re headlining the Reading and Leeds festivals. How does a band prepare for such huge shows?
We huddle up, make sure we’ve got our brains on the same page and try to get a good mental set-up. For the first two songs, you’re still feeling it out. You don’t get to sound check – so you’re correcting little things. But after that, there’s this connection between the audience and the band, and when that’s frying on all six cylinders, there’s nothing on Earth that can touch it.
How do you wind down afterwards?
Provided it all goes well, anything could happen. We’re talking about bringing in chimpanzees as party favours – just like ‘Hey, check out my monkey.’ There’s been talk of bringing in some helium, Vitamin D milk, you know: shit that really puts a party together.
Your band mate Dave Keuning will certainly be enjoying himself if the NME awards USA party is anything to go by.
Yeah. We had to look after him to a point, then we went back to the hotel and lost him from there. He’s been turning up at rehearsals, so he’s alive and everything, but there’s still a big question mark over that night. He’d definitely had a lot of cookies. I think we all had. It was an excuse for everyone to cut loose
You roped in Mike Tyson for your NME award 2008 acceptance speech video. Will he be joining you onstage?
He might. He’s a little titchy these days so we might need to lower the mic a bit.
How did you meet him?
We first met in the Asian quarter of Vegas. We were all hoarding up the karaoke space. Then in walks Mike Tyson. You could just tell he was up for a bit of karaoke. He just had that look in his eye, y’know? So it was kinda love at first sight. Me and Mike did ‘I wanna Dance with Somebody’ by Whitney Houston, and then afterwards, we shared a plate of Asian delicacies. All of that is true.
Any particular songs you’d think he’d work on?
A duet on ‘Shadowplay’ would be cool. He brought up doing ‘I wanna Dance with Somebody’ but I don’t think it’d work with out band.
Will the new album be finished by august?
That’s the plan but you can get on a roll with some things. A lot of the songs on ‘Sam’s Town’ were just offshoots of other ideas that turned out to be songs. You never know until it’s done, but were hoping to get it all licked in June. But get ready to shit your pants because it’s going to be good. For those of you with incontinence this album’s not for you.
Is your produced Stuart Price pulling you guys in a more dancey direction?
I think Stuart is a very musical guy. He’s mindful – he’s just got a lot of good ideas. His spin on things is really unexpected and really great.
Why do American festivals suck compared to British festivals?
I don’t think America has adopted its festival kids yet. It’s kind of a fringe thing. It really should do, because it’s a celebration of people, but we’re too busy thinking about terrorism and hamburgers. Give us another 100 years.
Will do. Is there any headline set that stands out for you?
We really enjoyed ourselves at T in the Park last year. We might not have played as well as we would’ve liked to, but the connection and the excitement were fantastic. We all rented Fiats and raced around Scotland. We had a Fiat Rally – the really ugly ones that are high in the back, they kinda look like mail trucks – we souped them up, we bored them out, had racing stripes on the sides, and parachutes on the back.
What would be your all-time festival line-up?
I guess I’d like to see people like tom Waits, The Stooges, Jane’s Addiction and the Jim Ross Circus. Bob Lazar, the UFO guy, would be doing symposiums. There would be a drum super group, a jazz quartet with Joshua Redman and Brian Blade dropping acid, M Ward, Cat Power. I’d put APB for Soul Coughing – this great New York band who broke up in the late 90’s. I’d ask Elton John to play and AC/DC would headline.
